Honestly I have to say the movie has much better pacing

Read this back in 2015 for the first time, was passing it in the local forbidden planet (that might not exist anymore due to the coof) and thought "ooh, looks interesting, what's this about?" and I bought it。By the end I was in tears at the story structure, the characterisations and the plots for everyone in this masterpiece of classic comicbook storytelling and it is my best example for anything written on Superman because there's never been a piece written since that even comes close to the hi Read this back in 2015 for the first time, was passing it in the local forbidden planet (that might not exist anymore due to the coof) and thought "ooh, looks interesting, what's this about?" and I bought it。By the end I was in tears at the story structure, the characterisations and the plots for everyone in this masterpiece of classic comicbook storytelling and it is my best example for anything written on Superman because there's never been a piece written since that even comes close to the highest ideals this book shows。(view spoiler)[ It tells the story of the last days of Clark Kent, of while saving the first manned mission to the Sun (yeah, cool huh!) he is given a FATAL dose of Solar radiation and his body is literally going to kill itself through the amount of energy he absorbed and rather than doing the existential thing that so many think is a cool trope, what does Grant Morrison do? "I'm going to make the world a better place while I have time。" and so begins Superman's labours。 (hide spoiler)]It's rare to see in comic fiction these days a protagonist who is doing things solely for the help of others and does it 100% of the time and does it knowing that they're doing it to make the world better when they're dead。 Most of the stuff coming out of comics these days is all preachy social justice about "fixing" the world and using characters as soap boxes for the writer to speak through。 Morrison writes a story that tells the best example of who and what Superman is meant to be。 "The Man of Tomorrow" the idea of what Humanity can be when it truly applies itself without thought to others。And in true style, there's nothing that is going to stop Clark from doing the right thing, even when that right thing will have him miss the few moments he has for himself with the woman he loves(view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)]That is one of the single best things I've seen in ANY fiction and it trumps any argument that comics are for kids, it shows that when a writer with talent is given the chance, they can create masterpieces。This is still one of my favourite books of all time and I love every single pen stroke that went into making it。On an artistic standard I initially didn't like the "smooth buff" version of Supes that this book shows, but quickly that bled away as I saw the idea was more to pay homage to the Greek Myths of it, that pic of Clark sitting there just happy and relaxed is glorious in every sense of the word as you can tell I REALLY like this book and it's a massive recommend from me on this。 I only talked about it because the new ereader I've got I downloaded kindle for it and I have a copy of the book on that too lol。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

4 Stars。 To me, there has always been a gentle melancholy to Superman。 He is the last son of a dead world, filled with yearning for his lost home and family and the desire to live up to their imagined standard。 So Superman contracting (what is in effect) a terminal disease due to Lex Luther's machinations is a terrific set up for a Superman story。 In the time that he has left, he opens up to Lois, confronts Luther and faces a number of otherworldly challenges。 The set up had me expecting a bit m 4 Stars。 To me, there has always been a gentle melancholy to Superman。 He is the last son of a dead world, filled with yearning for his lost home and family and the desire to live up to their imagined standard。 So Superman contracting (what is in effect) a terminal disease due to Lex Luther's machinations is a terrific set up for a Superman story。 In the time that he has left, he opens up to Lois, confronts Luther and faces a number of otherworldly challenges。 The set up had me expecting a bit more of a unified narrative than it ended up being, but I didn't mind, as most of the stories ended up being wonderful。 One issue that I had was that occasionally Morrison's storytelling gets a bit convoluted in its time-traveling, universe-hopping, look-at-all-the-silver-age-mythology-i-know Morrisonness, but for the most part he restrains his more self-indulgent tendencies (at least in comparison to his run on Batman)。 For example, I didnt think that the chapter on the death of Pa Kent, in which Superman faces his own grief and the limits of his powers, needed 3 alternate dimension Supermen, but it still ended up being a fun and moving Superman story。The highlight for me was the artwork, which may be my favorite superman art that I've ever seen。 Richly colored and detailed without losing the golden-age cartoonishness that has always felt like part of the character's essence, the artwork lifts Morrison's enjoyable writing to the next level。 。。。more

After reading the worst comic I’ve ever read in the shape of Wonder Woman: Earth One and shattering my image of Superman with Red Son, I needed something to get me back on track。 This was the perfect choice。 It is an incredible comic with a carefully made artwork。 It feels wholesome, even though death is incoming and made me fall in love with Supes all over again。 There are letdowns of course。 There was this petty competition between men™️ to prove they were the most worthy of Lois。 What was it After reading the worst comic I’ve ever read in the shape of Wonder Woman: Earth One and shattering my image of Superman with Red Son, I needed something to get me back on track。 This was the perfect choice。 It is an incredible comic with a carefully made artwork。 It feels wholesome, even though death is incoming and made me fall in love with Supes all over again。 There are letdowns of course。 There was this petty competition between men™️ to prove they were the most worthy of Lois。 What was it about? I only read this because my husband wanted to re-read it but it's a really enjoyable volume and I genuinely like Superman。 Just because he isn't some tragic figure (here's where I state I don't understand the rabid love some fans have for Batman) doesn't mean his adventures aren't interesting or filled with action。 The Silver Age feel to this book works well for Superman and while not all of the comics are light-hearted adventures (the overall plot here definitely isn't)the lighter, sci-fi feel I only read this because my husband wanted to re-read it but it's a really enjoyable volume and I genuinely like Superman。 Just because he isn't some tragic figure (here's where I state I don't understand the rabid love some fans have for Batman) doesn't mean his adventures aren't interesting or filled with action。 The Silver Age feel to this book works well for Superman and while not all of the comics are light-hearted adventures (the overall plot here definitely isn't)the lighter, sci-fi feel really show off what's best about Superman。 While the art style isn't my absolute favorite, it also feels very Silver Age and Quietly does a really great job at drawing Clark Kent and Superman wholly differently, I was super impressed。Lex Luthor in general is probably my favorite villain and he was extra great here。 I loved his niece, his crazy prison antics, his disdain for Superman, his condescension towards everyone and particularly Clark Kent, his short short orange shorts, all of it is great。 I have no knowledge of Superman's history outside the basics (as per usual with all comics), so many of the new-to-me characters were also really entertaining, like Dr。 Quintum。 Ma and Pa Kent make an appearance as well and you can't help but love them。Superman is a good boy and a great superhero and reading about him was nice and that's all I want from my comics。 Maybe I just like my superheroes to actually be people to look up to instead of grimdark protagonists forced into heroics。 Lois is a bit weak and I don't really 'get' her relationship with Superman vs。 Clark Kent, but I suppose that's staying mostly true to the original comics and it wasn't that big a deal。 Otherwise very solid book and Superman is definitely not boring。 。。。more

Man, this was great。 Morrison does all the good stuff he would obviously like to do with Superman if the DC continuity didn't get in the way。 It's a loving depiction of the Man of Steel that really understands the heart of the character。 Man, this was great。 Morrison does all the good stuff he would obviously like to do with Superman if the DC continuity didn't get in the way。 It's a loving depiction of the Man of Steel that really understands the heart of the character。 。。。more

“All star Superman” is one of the (maybe the) best Superman story I’ve read for a long time (ever)。 It is an absolute blast to read through the series。 The entire gang is here, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, the Kent’s, Lex Luthor and many more。 If you’re DC fan, a newcomer to the Superman mythos or even a regular comic book reader this is a great place to start。

3。5 stars A flawed but very fun take on “Classic” Super Man。 I’m by no means a Golden/Silver Age aficionado, and probably didn’t get all the references here。 Still, I feel it’s a little overrated。 The art is very good, and the twist in issue ten probably rose the level of my whole review。 But is it fantastic? … Not in my opinion。

Superman only has a year left to live after being successfully poisoned by Lex Luthor, so he sets out to achieve twelve labors that will protect humanity in his absence and seal his reputation as the most noble of all superheroes。 The story plays out like a compilation of greatest hits from Superman’s seventy-five years of comic book adventures; there’s no new material when it comes to the twelve labors。 While this serves well as a wistful encapsulation of Superman lore, the rapidly changing plo Superman only has a year left to live after being successfully poisoned by Lex Luthor, so he sets out to achieve twelve labors that will protect humanity in his absence and seal his reputation as the most noble of all superheroes。 The story plays out like a compilation of greatest hits from Superman’s seventy-five years of comic book adventures; there’s no new material when it comes to the twelve labors。 While this serves well as a wistful encapsulation of Superman lore, the rapidly changing plots don’t build a very engrossing story as a whole。 The stories Morrison chooses to retell are firmly in the zany-bizarre sci-fi mode of Superman tales which serves Quietly’s color-rich illustration style well。 On the other hand his character models are strangely done: Lois Lane looks like a nineteen year old sorority party girl, and Superman is an HGH roid-raging mass monster。 Morrison’s shallow characterizations don’t help in this regard, and for the most part there’s little heart beneath the surface flash in these panels。 A welcome relief though is Lex Luthor, back to his classic incarnation: brash, charismatic, ingenious, an admirably convincing champion of selfish human artfulness。 There are some touching moments in the collection, the death of Jonathan Kent and Superman’s moments of caring for the common man, but overall this series seems to serve as a relatively fun but shallow romp through some Superman nostalgia。 。。。more

The beauty of a well-written superhero story is it can be so much more than a continuous power showcase。 Splash page scenes are always beautiful to look at and get the blood pumping, but real value lies in world-building and character development。 "All-Star Superman" delivers on all fronts。 Superman is known for his feats of incredible strength, yet he is one of the most balanced and human characters in comic history。 His extraordinary heart separates him from, say, Homelander or Omni-Man, who u The beauty of a well-written superhero story is it can be so much more than a continuous power showcase。 Splash page scenes are always beautiful to look at and get the blood pumping, but real value lies in world-building and character development。 "All-Star Superman" delivers on all fronts。 Superman is known for his feats of incredible strength, yet he is one of the most balanced and human characters in comic history。 His extraordinary heart separates him from, say, Homelander or Omni-Man, who use their strength to supplement their delusions of superiority。 "All-Star Superman" is a story that goes beneath the surface and shows us that even Superman - who, at face value, is otherworldly - faces tragedy。 When he flies too close to the sun and learns his cells are slowly dying due to solar poisoning, Kal-El reckons with his future and the reputation he has built。 To ensure he ends his journey on a high note, he gets his affairs in order: giving Lois Lane his powers for a day, traveling to distant planets, and, most tragically, writing his will。 His travels are filled with incredible character moments that show Superman is so much more than what he can do with his power set。 Humanity, ironically, is something Kal-El both embodies and strives for。 Lex Luthor serves as the primary villain in all his power-hungry glory。 His arrogance, resentment, and ruthlessness are something to behold。 "All-Star Superman" does a stunning job showing the Man of Steel in a nuanced and three-dimensional way, and is all the better for it。 This is an easy recommend。 。。。more
